Before tightening the reel, stop the machine. To save your fingers unplug the lapping machine. Wipe off a small area of the reel blade and a small area of the bedknife. If both are sharp, do not continue to grind metal away. If the reel and bedknife are not sharp, turn the lapping machine back on.
Back lapping is worth a shot. Most places around here will do the back lapping for around 40 to 60 and 140 for a grind. Not sure what the going rate is in your local area. I use medium to fine Clover Compound and spread it on with an ice-cream type stick. Trimmers are tapped on the reel shaft, and they sell a crank which screws in. You can also use a pair of Vise-Grips on the hub of the sprocket after you remove the chain. Under no circumstances would I recommend power back lapping.
